VIP: Please note the schedule at the café is changed. I have decided to leave a month earlier than planned. Summer does that to you J but my main reason is to spend time with Solomon as his days in the physical world are coming to an end. I will be leaving from the café on June 17th and I do not know if I will be returning at all.

What a month May was!!  As I mentioned last month in the Newsletter I was taking off May 1st and 2nd to rest/shop etc.  So this surprised me. Every year I promise myself a $1000 [thousand] shopping day. It’s a day I have always said I would just spend it on whatever I liked. Every year something happened that I had to take the savings and apply it elsewhere. [IE: my cat, unexpected water bill etc., etc.]  This year I promised that nothing would stop me from having this ‘day’. Nothing did.  Except the fact that I did NOT enjoy it at all. I headed out to St. Albert after my yoga class with my $1000. I intended to buy plants at Holes and have lunch. As I arrived I headed to the place where I ‘thought’ the food was. Only one vegan sandwich was there and one vegan soup. I bought them and went to sit down. Upon walking I saw that there was a lovely café and took my tray in there and sat down. Less than 10 minutes later a waiter comes over and tells me that I have to leave as you can only eat food in here if you order it, you may not take it in from the sandwich bar that is CLEARLY connected to this café. I was appalled. Suffice to say, it was a Monday, 1.30pm and barely a soul in this café. How hard would it be to have let me stay and simple say to me ‘next time mam, could you please be aware that this is available for the menu food only’. But no, kick me out. Never will I return to Holes. I did purchase a terranuim, Venus fly trap and some seeds for my garden but the taste that waiter left in my mouth truly ruined my shopping day at Holes.

Next I headed for West Edmonton Mall.  I parked outside Bed Bath and Beyond as I anticipated that would be my last stop. I went and walked, and walked and walked. My intention was to stop at the tattoo place as I am micro blading my eyebrows. Nothing available till May 30th so I booked the appointment left my cash deposit and walked to The Bay.  There to my delight was 75% off on Teflon. I bought the small frying pan that I have to say I use daily and it’s a delight to own. Also 60% off on king bed sheets so I bought Egyptian cotton in a light blue as that was the only color they came in for the sale. ME OH MY, I will never buy any other kind of sheets again. What a big treat Egyptian cotton is. Now I prepared to head back to Bed Bath and Beyond.  By now I was tiring and even though I had running shoes on my feet were getting sore. I found shopping to be more of a chore than a delight LOL. Made it to BBB and proceeded to purchase a garbage pail for my kitchen, tea towels, dish towels, a solar owl lamp for my garden, a crystal lamp for my table at work, and pet stairs for the cats under their window that goes out to the cat cage. That was it! $1000 shopping day and after 4 years of waiting to do this found out it was not the fun day I thought. I actually headed home and had to take a nap. However, the solar owl is awesome to look at and I actually purchased another one to match it. The next day was more relaxing. I headed for the massage using my son’s GC that I was given by him on my birthday. Then I repaid the gift by taking him out to Japanese Village with my grandson and granddaughter as it was his birthday. My son turned 46 on May 1st.

Back to the café after my 2 days off and since that takes up all my time [one of the reasons I also am leaving] nothing much else happened until May 11th where I had to take Solomon into the vet again for new x-rays to see if his meds are working. The x-rays were then sent to a radiologist and the end result was that his lungs have cleared of the major fluid but his heart is failing. He has about 6 weeks, possible more, but definitely less than 6 months. My time will be spent with him and he will be in my arms when he passes. Lucas passed this way so I know what to watch for but know it will be another major heart break at this time. Luckily I am not travelling too much, so not a lot of strain on his heart at this time.

Next Mother’s Day. My son took me to Padamani’s for lunch and he also gave me a gift certificate for Home Depot. The following day I went and picked up lilies, Irish moss and some lavender plants. These all were planted by the long weekend in May. Thanks to the rain they are growing well.

Next on May 18th I got the permanent tooth that I spoke about last month that broke but was able to be saved. What a great dentist. I also ordered a lower night brace so that the metal that was holding my lower teeth in the back could be removed. I had been quoted $1600 for this by another dentist and this dentist charged me $200 !! What a difference when you shop around and find NON greedy people.

Kept up yoga but am feeling that I can do this at home. A $100 a month is a lot to do the stretching for an hour at a time twice a week. Funnily enough my credit card that I had the yoga payments going onto was hacked on the VERY same day that my payment went through with them. A small purchase bought in Toronto at Sears. Thus I had to cancel my card and informed the yoga folks that since they were the only ones who had my credit card on a revolving basis it must have come from them. They did not even seem to be concerned at all about this. With this in mind I will try to do yoga at home now.

On May 22nd, the long weekend I took the Monday off. My broker for my mortgage had sent out GC’s for Earls as a thank you gift and I finally used mine with my granddaughter. It was a gorgeous hot sunny day and we sat on the patio; me with a veggie burger and pitcher of margarita and her with a Caesar salad and a pitcher of sangria. Oh and Janice?? I know I promised you the lunch but you went to England LOL. I will still take us out though. J

Lastly I applied for my Old Age Pension as this has to be done 11 months out. To my GREAT horror, based upon the fact that I was born in England they request not only my Canadian citizenship paper BUT proof of my landing status. Both of my parents are deceased and I do not have that proof. I had to sign immigration papers to give Service Canada permission to ask immigration to search for these documents that would be dated in 1966. Apparently this can take forever. I am hoping that it does not take more than 11months as I told the gentleman at Service Canada ‘I am depending on this to retire’. I will let time take care of this as it’s out of my hands.

Oh and one more thing, by the time you read this I will have my eyebrows micro bladed. J I will talk more about this next month as today is Sunday 28th and I am finishing the Newsletter so it will go out on time. As mentioned prior, the café takes up all my time and getting this out on time is my priority. My business is very important to me.

May you all have an AWESOME June and please note the time frame below under Appointments. Due to the shows I will only have a limited amount of time to do office reads this summer.

Meditate for peace and follow your heart not your fears.

CAT COSTS: With Solomon sick more vet bills will occur, but as pets get older so they need more care. Just like humans. Be prepared for this, as I see many pets suffering as people count their money and refuse to treat them. If you cannot afford a pet please do not get one.

Kitty litter came to $78.69 I switched to that new litter called Slide. It’s fantastic for scooping. Tinned food came to $94.09. Raw food came to $47.84.Greenie dental treats came to $62.98 but I did stock up on these. Dried fish for China came to $50.89. Strips to test Solomon’s blood came to $81.99. His medications for his heart and fluid build-up came to $57.47. His second set of x-rays plus sending them to a radiologist came to $229.95. Lastly the pet steps I bought were $47.99. Total for the month for food, vets, treats, etc came to $751.89. I did not need dried food.

Where my main expense was this month was to the vets and the medication for Solomon. His meds came to $133.68 and that looks like what it will cost me monthly. [Not counting his insulin, strips and needles] Lastly his vet bill for two house calls that took blood and checked him was $399.23.

If you are thinking of getting a pet please know that from the cute stage, they grow with personality to adult stage. Animals feel with unconditional love from their souls. They get attached and used to their homes. If you cannot give up 12-18 years and maybe longer, do NOT get a pet. It is not a companion till you find a mate, have a child, decide to move to an apartment that will not allow pets, it is a companion for life. They also need dental care, checkups and GOOD food. Not this cheap, no nutrient food that I see so many people buy. Your pets will suffer later just as you would if all you ate was junk.

Look at rescue places for loving animals. These pets will not only be grateful, it's almost like they know you saved them and love and adore you for it. Think before you add to your life. Can you give this type of commitment? If the answer is yes then enjoy looking for your new companion. Think older if you can, for some reason older pets are harder to re-home and they are much sadder as they wait not knowing what it was they did to be removed from the homes they knew.

My Coincidence this Month:  An old client booked this month with me who I had told to learn the tarot trade based upon her chart. I had not seen her in ages and during my read to her she told me that six years ago I had told her it would take ages for her to learn but she would get there. She is ready. I am leaving the café and told her to apply. I will let you know next month if she got the job and takes my shift. I cannot see why as they need someone to take my place and she is perfect.  Not only that she came at the exact time that I had decided to leave. She is ESTATIC!!

Many folks say my life is a dream. To me it is. But this is why I tend to believe it is. I pass on things to people who are open and ready for the next steps. I believe in karma and you get back what you pass on.

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.- Romain Rolland, Nobe

Learn Why Buddhist Leader, Thich Nhat Hanh, Believes You Should Eat Vegan

For many people, their faith and religious beliefs are very important aspects of their daily lives, steering them toward the decisions that they feel are right for themselves and their loved ones. It is clear, therefore, that whenever a prominent spiritual leader urges their followers to take action to save our planet’s vulnerable ecosystems or animals, their words can have a powerful impact. For example, when Pope Francis released a powerful encyclical urging Catholics around the world to help tackle climate change and protect animals, many environmental organizations were quick to praise his forward-thinking approach.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Buddhist leader, has long taught that compassion to animals is a vital part of a spiritual lifestyle. His words on the importance of preserving our planet and all of its species hold a vital lesson, not just to those of us who may be Buddhist, but to anyone who wants to live a more sustainable, kind life.

Lessons That Can Save the World

In his statement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Hanh wrote: “We need to realize that the Earth is not just our environment. The Earth is not something outside of us. Breathing with mindfulness and contemplating your body, you realize that you are the Earth. You realize that your consciousness is also the consciousness of the Earth. Look around you–what you see is not your environment, it is you.”

“When you realize the Earth is so much more than simply your environment, you’ll be moved to protect her in the same way as you would yourself,” he added. “This is the kind of awareness, the kind of awakening that we need, and the future of the planet depends on whether we’re able to cultivate this insight or not. The Earth and all species on Earth are in real danger.” His words point to a disturbing truth: that we are in the midst of creating the sixth mass extinction event on our planet.

An extinction event is defined as the loss of 75 percent of Earth’s animal species within a period of three to twenty-two centuries. A recent report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London revealed that 58 percent of our planet’s wildlife has vanished in the past four decades alone, so we are well on our way to meeting these criteria. The five previous extinction events were caused by natural disasters, but this one has been driven by human industrial activities. Extensive habitat loss caused by deforestation has been heavily associated with the animal agriculture and palm oil industries.

In the Amazon rainforest, for example, an estimated 80 percent of the total deforestation that has occurred to date can be attributed to livestock production. In the rainforests of Indonesia, an estimated three hundred football fields’ worth of trees are destroyed every hour to make way for palm plantations: a process that kills and displaces countless wild animals.

Thich Nhat Hahn Foundation

Thich Nhat Hanh believes that the solution to our environmental crisis can be found, if we all make the effort to embrace a simpler lifestyle. “We need to consume in such a way that truly sustains our peace and happiness,” he said in his statement to the UNFCCC. “Only when we’re sustainable as humans will our civilization become sustainable.” He believes that a reduced consumption of animal products is a vital component of this shift to a more sustainable lifestyle.

One Simple Shift

“We need to consume in such a way that keeps our compassion alive,” he stated. “And yet many of us consume in a way that is very violent. Forests are cut down to raise cattle for beef, or to grow grain for liquor, while millions in the world are dying of starvation. Reducing the amount of meat we eat and alcohol we consume by 50 percent is a true act of love for ourselves, for the Earth and for one another. Eating with compassion can already help transform the situation our planet is facing, and restore balance to ourselves and the Earth.”

The production of beef is an extremely resource-intensive process that requires 160 times more land than the production of similar plant protein products. One acre of arable land can yield 250 pounds of beef … but that same acre could yield 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, 53,000 pounds of potatoes, or 30,000 pounds of carrots.

Vast amounts of water are also required to irrigate crops used to feed the animals, keep the animals hydrated, and clean slaughterhouse equipment. The production of one pound of beef requires 1,799 gallons of water, 576 gallons of water are required to produce a pound of pork, while 468 gallons are necessary to make one pound of chicken. In comparison, only 119 gallons of water are required for the production of one pound of potatoes. In fact, a single individual who chooses to leave meat and dairy off their plates for just one year could save 200,000 gallons of freshwater resources!

As the leading organization at the forefront of the conscious consumerism movement, it is One Green Planet’s view that our food choices have the power to heal our broken food system and pave the way for a truly sustainable future. By choosing to eat more plant-based foods, you can help conserve precious land and freshwater supplies, thereby ensuring that our food system will be capable of supporting the world’s growing population in the future. As Thich Nhat Hanh put it in his closing statement to the UNFCCC: “Cherishing our precious Earth–falling in love with the Earth – is not an obligation. It is a matter of personal and collective happiness and survival.”
