VIP: I am back to a basic schedule now and office reads may be booked at any time. Please choose your package from my website before calling.

Ahhhhhh September brought me some rest. As I left off last month I was about to head out to do a carnival in Sylvan Lake. Due to Solomon and his heart I chose to drive back and forth. Wednesday Kirsten [my granddaughter]] and I drove out and set up. Thursday I drove back for 3pm to 10pm. A VERY poor showing of folks who wanted reads. I drove back Friday for Noon to 10pm. Another dismal day.  Reluctant to sit through a weekend of nothing I approached the owner of the carnival and told him I was tearing down. Feeling relieved I headed back by 11pm to Edmonton, my home and a MUCH needed rest. Next year, as long as I am accepted for The Fringe I will not book any shows on Labor Day weekend if it follows after The Fringe closes. I will work that extra hour at The Fringe that is available to us if need be.

With two days free I started working on my garden. Last year it snowed so early that I left a lot of it. This year I was so busy you’d think a forest was out there. I laid out my plan in my head and started weeding first. However, as I weeded I realised pruning needed to be done. Lawn needed to be fertilized and so much more.  I headed to Home Depot and to my GREAT delight they had a special on the cactus border that I am doing a part of my garden with. The regular $19.99 box was down to $3.50. I bought 3 of them. Saving myself $50. I found the quality of garden tools lacking, so although I said I would never return to Holes based upon the restaurant rudeness, I went back but only to the gardening area. There I found a GREAT saw, a wonderful pruner, strong garden gloves and some sphagnum moss in small quantities, another thing Home Depot lacked.  Now work in the garden was becoming pleasurable.  I weeded the entire sections; I pruned the rose bush and dead headed other plants. I cut down the lilies. I mowed the lawn, fertilized and re-seeded it and put all my tools to bed in the shed.  I did a wee bit every day till all was done. So proud.

On Sept. 5th I dropped Venus off at the vet for her dental work. She came through like a champ and my pocket book took a loss of $883.00 However, two of her lower teeth are gone and luckily once cleaned the upper molars were fine. I had her on pain killers for two days and she looked like she had travelled off to the Moon. I quickly took her off them and once again she was eating, sleeping with us and running around the garden and enjoying herself.

All month, whether it be a Tuesday or a Wednesday my ghost writer for my book came over and we are now at chapter 10. Hoping to finish by December and then get it self-published. We are aiming for a massive social media launch on April 12th to 22nd. I hope to release the book on Earth Day as that day has a VERY special meaning to me. I will keep you updated as the book gets written.

FINALLY I got to celebrate my g’daughter’s birthday that had been on August 13th. She had turned 20 years of age. We went for dinner; I gave her a cash gift as most young people love that and enjoyed our time together.

You know I have written about this before. People who cancel when I go out of my way to book them. Clearly I had written that I would NOT be taking appointments till September 10th as I needed a rest/break after the back to back shows. However, these two girls e-mailed that they were only in town till the 8th and could they book on the 7th. DAMN!! I foolishly obliged ONCE AGAIN!! Truly the Universe shows me to stick to my own rest. As the day arrived and I was getting ready for the 1.30pm appointment that they clearly had said ‘no reminder call was necessary’ I get an e-mail at 11am [yes 2 hours out] say “ Missy, {???????} Yes, they addressed it Missy we are cancelling. I rolled my eyes quickly replying ‘pls do not book with me again’ as that is my standard practice for no shows or cancellations too close to the time.  It’s funny because EVERY single time someone has asked for a favor on my time off OR between shows they have landed up cancelling.  I have learnt my lesson Universe. No more ‘fit ins’ on my rest time.

September 10th arrived and I was booked for two days. Then I rested on the 12th and took my friend Janice to the new vegan pizza place on Jasper. Die Pie it is called. I was very impressed with the pizza. The crust is to DIE for. LOL. However, I bought some vegan brie cheese and if I thought the pizza was good well this cheese just took the cake. HOLY cow, it was good. I gobbled it down on ryvita in two days flat. I crave for more every day and will be ordering soon. My only disappointment in the place was the seating. It is not a very comfortable or private setting for eating. It’s more of a lunch place due to this. Had I opened a place like this I would have put booths with comfort and privacy, not tables lined up next to each other where you can hear all that people say. The tables that are there are small. I noticed that a ton of room was still open in the back so perhaps they are planning to do cheese making classes back there HINT HINT.

Back to two more days of full bookings at my office and then I took a spa day. Headed over to my vegan buddy Jackie and had a 90 minute massage and an ear candling session. Truly relaxing and as I felt very deserving. Much to my delight I had the next 5 days off. As each day dawned I rose, fed the cats, took care of my ritual of the morning or should I say nearly afternoon as I do not rise till 10am or later, that consists of e-mails answered, e-mails added to my Newsletter list from shows, banking checked, work out on my back machine and my vibration machine and then onto chores, TV, reading, groceries or whatever needs to be done.  Eating on the patio on sunny days and TRULY enjoying my breaks.

I guess my biggest purchase of the month was the covering for my gutters. I have lived here for 3 ½ years and I noticed the gutters had some plants growing in them. [Yup!!] Time for a cleaning. I have 225 feet of gutter and the cost would have been around $300 just to clean them. For $998 I was able to get a full cleaning plus have the steel netting installed on top so cleaning will never be necessary.  Not only did they do the cleaning in record time after I booked, they were the only company to answer their phone as I called around.  Highly recommending DrainRite if this service is ever needed.

I left for Fort McMurray on Sept 21st. It was pouring rain and this stopped all construction giving me a straight nonstop drive. Hotel as per usual was lovely. You know when the hotel desk clerk asks about your kitty that you are at the right hotel. I have never stayed anywhere else based upon the service I get here. The show was GREAT for the first two days however perhaps it was the weather but Sunday, the day that is usually the busiest was dead. Thus this show that had not dropped more than 10% now dropped by 30%. EVERY vendor felt the drop. Luckily this is one of the smart shows that offer 10% off the booth if you book early. ALL shows have dropped in income. People are not spending the way they used to and many vendors are choosing to drop out of shows and some even closing or changing their businesses. Personally I think I am writing a book at the correct time. Time will tell. :)

Back safely from Fort McMurray with the love of my life Solomon, I now am home till mid-November. I have one show this month, The Edmonton Woman’s Show. I am trying to stay close to home for Solomon. Then 4 back to back shows in November. Then I am done till late March or early April YES!!!!!! WOWSA this year has flown.

Talking about Solomon, who, thank you to all those who ask me about him when I see you, is fine. The vet was here yesterday to take blood again. His heart beat is 150 and that she says is GREAT. However, the medication for his hyperthyroidism affects the kidneys tremendously. His blood work showed that he is not getting enough electrodes.  We had cut one medication last month and now we are cutting his hyperthyroid meds in half. This is what I hate about medication. You take it for one problem and it creates another.  I do not take medication based upon this but I find that pet food is still not up to par. My cats eat only the best, they eat raw, tinned of high quality, non-grain kibble, filtered water, and still it appears Siamese cats are prone to kidney disease as they age.  Both Venus and Solomon are 15 soon and China is 14 soon. Its old age I guess and I have always said this is the time your pets will need more care. Luckily I have no qualms about putting other things off in the material world to keep them pain free and happy.

Oh yes, I bought a carpet cleaner this month. A Bissell that to my GREAT delight works wonderfully. It was on sale at 50% off. I managed to get the last one on the shelf and cleaned the front room and stairs. The cost of the carpet cleaner was the same cost that I would have paid to have carpet cleaners come in once!! As soon as the shows are done I plan to clean one room per day as my house is fully carpeted.

Today is the 27th and tonight I will go out to dinner with my g’daughter Kirsten and hear all about her vacation. She just went to Vegas, Disneyland and Arizona. Looking forward to later.

I think this is it folks. Chat is about to wrap up!! I said I would have a longer column here after the shows so I hope you enjoyed it.  Enjoy the beginning of fall, enjoy what is left of the sunny days. Make sure you connect to your soul energy. This can only be done with meditation.   Enjoy your days and moments of time as they cannot be replaced. I wish you all positive thoughts to all the actions ‘you choose’ to do with your life.

CAT COSTS:  I know this was ANOTHER insane month for costs. I have put my basement carpeting on hold for a while right now based upon cat costs. So based upon vet visits let’s start with that. As I mentioned above Venus had dental work. Cost of that was $883.60. 2 extractions, cleaning, x-rays, and all the other stuff they do plus her pain meds. On the 12th September I had to refill another bottle of Semintra. This stuff is only lasting two weeks for the two cats. $49.37per bottle. Lastly on the 26th September I had a home visit for Solomon as he’s just too stressed, vicious and extremely bad at the vet. He had blood work to do as I mentioned above, plus I bought 2 more bottles of the Semintra and the entire cost was $342.56. Next kitty litter came to $85.00.Tinned food came to $81.95. Dry food came to $47.22. Raw food came to $55.88 and lastly China’s dry fish that she LOVES came to $30.55 for 4 bags. Total cost for the month for my three elderly cats came to $1576.13. YUP, a tremendously expensive month and no doubt I could have carpeted my basement for that amount but the carpet would never love me the way these cats have for all their years of living.

If you are thinking of getting a pet please know that from the cute stage, they grow with personality to adult stage. Animals feel with unconditional love from their souls. They get attached and used to their homes. If you cannot give up 12-18 years and maybe longer, do NOT get a pet. It is not a companion till you find a mate, have a child, decide to move to an apartment that will not allow pets, it is a companion for life. They also need dental care, checkups and GOOD food. Not this cheap, no nutrient food that I see so many people buy. Your pets will suffer later just as you would if all you ate was junk.

Look at rescue places for loving animals. These pets will not only be grateful, it's almost like they know you saved them and love and adore you for it. Think before you add to your life. Can you give this type of commitment? If the answer is yes then enjoy looking for your new companion. Think older if you can, for some reason older pets are harder to re-home and they are much sadder as they wait not knowing what it was they did to be removed from the homes they knew.

My Coincidence this Month: Although I had a lovely month with time off and only one show, nothing that I did created what I term a coincidence. When this happens my belief is that I am in a time frame of energy that just is showing me to enjoy the stages of life at this moment. So I am :)

AWARENESS

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime.- Romain Rolland, Nobe

VcToria’s Comment: From a tee shirt a person was wearing at The Edmonton Fringe 2017: YOU CANNOT LOVE ANIMALS IF YOU WALK AROUND WITH A BELLY FULL OF THEM.

The Wool Industry

Sheep are gentle individuals who, like all animals, feel pain, fear, and loneliness. But because there’s a market for their fleece and skins, they’re treated as nothing more than wool-producing machines.

If they were left alone and not genetically manipulated, sheep would grow just enough wool to protect themselves from temperature extremes. The fleece provides them with effective insulation against both cold and heat.

Shearers are usually paid by volume, not by the hour, which encourages fast work without any regard for the welfare of the sheep. This hasty and careless shearing leads to frequent injuries, and workers use a needle and thread to sew the worst wounds shut—without any pain relief. Strips of skin—and even teats, tails, and ears—are often cut or ripped off during shearing.

A PETA investigation of more than 30 shearing sheds in the U.S. and Australia uncovered rampant abuse. Shearers were caught punching, kicking, and stomping on sheep, in addition to hitting them in the face with electric clippers and standing on their heads, necks, and hind limbs. One shearer was seen beating a lamb in the head with a hammer. Another even used a sheep’s body to wipe the sheep’s own urine off the floor. And yet another shearer repeatedly twisted and bent a sheep’s neck, breaking it.

In Australia, where more than 50 percent of the world’s merino wool—which is used in products ranging from clothing to carpets—originates, lambs are forced to endure a gruesome procedure called “mulesing,” in which huge chunks of skin are cut from the animals’ backsides, often without any painkillers.

Within weeks of birth, lambs’ ears are hole-punched, their tails are chopped off, and the males are castrated without any painkillers. Male lambs are castrated when they are between 2 and 8 weeks old, either by making an incision and cutting their testicles out or with a rubber ring used to cut off blood supply—one of the most painful methods of castration possible. When the lambs’ testicles don’t fall off as expected, shearers often just cut off them with clippers. Every year, hundreds of lambs die before the age of 8 weeks from exposure or starvation, and mature sheep die every year from disease, lack of shelter, and neglect.

Unwanted Australian sheep are shipped to the Middle East on crowded multilevel ships. These voyages, which can last weeks, go to countries where animal welfare standards are non-existent. The suffering sheep are dragged off the ships, loaded onto trucks, and dragged by their ears and legs to slaughterhouses—which are often unregulated—where their throats are slit while they’re still conscious.

No amount of fluff can hide the fact that anyone who buys wool supports a cruel and bloody industry. There are plenty of durable, stylish, and warm fabrics available that aren’t made from wool or animal skins. Please join the millions of people all over the world who know that compassion is the fashion. Save a sheep—don’t buy wool.
